I recently discovered that I actually changed my habits on information bits and pieces I collect for myself and those I share. Be it Twitter, SlideShare, Google+, Facebook or still Xing.com, this blog, Email, etc. the likes are high that on many channels information tends to be redundant (such as those sharing their Twitter content on Facebook, etc.). However, there have been enough discussions on that topic. For me personally, I have chosen to distribute content and the way I can be contacted according the following list:

“Wie kann man das kreative Potenzial Deutschlands besser nutzen?” (How can you make better use of the creative potential of Germany?)

Cornelia Pieper, State Minister in the German Foreign Office, was discussing with me on that subject. Cherno Jobatey (www.cherno-jobatey.de/) moderated the show.

I thought the topic was quite interesting. Especially in the creative industries, Startups suffer from the amount of good people to fill open job positions. Try to find someone with experience in Online Marketing, or a half-senior Sales guy who even should have a few contacts himself, or a good graphic designer, a Ruby developer, etc. pp. – there are many challenges in how to shape Germany as a very good location for startups and established companies in the problem space “Creative”.

For those of you who don’t speak German, sorry for posting the German video. My main points were:

• How can you enable public schools and universities to keep up with private instituions who seem to have or create more entrepreneurial skills and mindsets?
• What are the technological foundations (even in pre-school) we need to establish in Germany?
• How do we avoid to discuss the “amount of VC money” in the market and the possibilities in the silicon valley with regards to the awesome companies built in Germany?
• What about the culture of failure? Will this be widely accepted?
• What kind of money is in the German market and ho do you actually prove you doing something when the focus is on the draft and proposal instead of results….

When we published the article “Do Point of Sale RFID-Based Information Services Make a Difference? Analyzing Consumer Perceptions for Designing Smart Product Information Services in Retail Business” (Quote: http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1451520) we thought about a way how RFID could change the gathering of information about a product prior of or during a purchase. Our main statement included product categories that could be interesting for such “scans” (using either barcodes or NFC). We used a portfolio showing electronic devices in the top field of “most likely products to be scanned to gather information”. Compared to actual scan trends as shown in the barcoo iPhone app (www.barcoo.de – one of the most popular product scan apps), also groceries are interesting to the user. Barcoo confirms, that, if kept simple, the idea of scanning a product, getting information and potentially even purchase it – is appealing to the people. However, 4 to 5 years ago, the scanning process was not easy, product data was not widespread, mobile internet was slow, cheap data rates non existent and people haven’t had so-called smartphones (iPhones, Android devices).

But now is the time: All in all a so-called sample store would become possible, in which people just scan products–no matter which technology they use–to either purchase them or get more information. Just recently I stumpled upon this amazing video from Korea (via Sven Wiesner – post on google+) in which the scanning process is in the center of the shopping activity:

I usually don’t blog about events, but this time it is worth it. At least to make you aware of upcoming events you should attend.

I had the chance to be a speaker at Infopark’s iico 2011 event (on Twitter) last week. I was very surprised of the quality of speakers and especially of the networking opportunities. The whole event (2 days and a day of workshops) was very well organized and had a nice (less web2.0) atmosphere. You can think of a Web2.0 event with people attending that have actual budgets.

The event is rather unknown among the Social Media Boheme, but it is worth going. Mainly because you get to know people you will not meet at the “classic” events and because you can talk business instantly.
